CASA GRANDE — Some school records can withstand the test of time and for 71 years it seemed that maybe only one team in Casa Grande Union school history would be able to say that they had the perfect season.

Up until this year the 1950 Cougars football team was the only group to finish the season undefeated and claimed the Class B state championship, as there were no playoffs back then.

This year’s CG Union team wrapped up the regular season 9-0, and the Cougars did so while navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year the Cougars were one game away from reaching the state championship game when they ran into a tough Glendale Cactus team in the semifinals. Despite the loss it was still a historic achievement as it was the first time in school history that the team advanced to the semifinals.

The Cougars will try to go a step further this season as their quest for a state title begins on Friday in the first round of the 4A Conference playoffs.

Through their nine regular season games, CG Union outscored opponents 389-62 as the defense held three opponents scoreless.

CG Union was one game shy of the usual 10-game schedule as Chandler Seton Catholic canceled the day of the game on Sept. 24 due to COVID, and the Cougars were unable to make that game up.

Another change to the schedule came toward the end of the regular season when Tucson Pueblo was the scheduled opponent but also canceled. Luckily the Cougars did find another opponent in Phoenix Arcadia.
