PRESCOTT VALLEY — Poston Butte’s Shane Landis-Ku has already accomplished a lot in his Broncos wrestling career.
The 120-pounder became the second wrestler in school history to win more than 100 career matches earlier this year, and he is the winningest wrestler in school history. Last week at the Division III Section II tournament, the senior became the school’s first two-time section champion.
The only thing that’s missing is a medal at the state meet.
It’s an accomplishment he came close to achieving last year after falling one spot shy of the fifth place match at 113. Because of his disappointment from last year, Landis-Ku has been wrestling with a chip on his shoulder all year.
“I don’t think it’s one of those things where he has to win to cement his legacy,” Poston Butte coach Traston Yates said. “The kid is going down as the winningest all-time wrestler in the school history by far. He’s a two-time section champion, and nobody has ever done that before. He’s really built a legacy here.”
Landis-Ku will put his 39-9 record on the line this weekend when the Division III state meet kicks off Friday at Findley Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
Landis-Ku is one of five wrestlers from Poston Butte to qualify for state, and he is one of 49 total wrestlers from the county to qualify, including two girls — Casa Grande Union’s Briana Quiroz (118) and Maricopa’s Ryleign Westerfield (185).
Division I and II begin Thursday with finals scheduled for Friday night, while Division III and IV start competition Friday, with finals scheduled for Saturday night.
