CASA GRANDE – There was no messing around for the Casa Grande Union football team in Thursday night’s homecoming game.
The Cougars led 28-0 after one quarter and 49-0 at halftime en route to a 55-7 victory over Douglas at Al Van Hazel Stadium. CG Union (4-0) scored touchdowns on seven of its 20 plays from scrimmage, averaging 16.5 yards per play.
“We kind of did whatever we wanted to in the first quarter and got the running clock going in the second quarter, which was the goal,” CG Union coach Jake Barro said. “It’s always fun to get one like this on homecoming. The best thing is, we got a lot of guys into the game.”
Quarterback Angel Flores threw two touchdown passes, going 4 of 6 for 99 yards. His two runs went for TDs of 47 and 14 yards.
“Angel did a good job of being safe with the football, and he was real efficient,” Barro said.
In scoring 55 points for the second straight game, the Cougars had three one-play touchdown drives along with a 45-yard punt return TD by Dee Azcueta.
“We played up to our standards, which is what we’ve done all year,” Barro said.
Douglas (1-2) was limited to minus-8 total yards, rushing for minus-11 and passing for 3. The Bulldogs had minus-65 rushing yards in the first half, with the bulk of the negative yards coming on three bad snaps and sacks by Derrick Kuykendall and Grant Johnson.
Andon Diaz and Azcueta had second-quarter interceptions for the Cougars, which only added to the offensive woes for Douglas.
“Our defense played great,” Barro said.
On the not-so great list for the Cougars were 13 penalties for 102 yards and two turnovers, the second of which was a muffed punt catch that led to Douglas scoring a touchdown on the game’s final play.
CG Union’s Demetrius Garrett completed a 33-yard option pass to Deandray Kelley on the game’s first play from scrimmage, followed by Kelley catching a 21-yard TD pass from Flores with 11:23 remaining in the first quarter.
On the Cougars’ next play from scrimmage, Flores broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown run.
The first-quarter scoring spree concluded with Azcueta’s punt return TD and a 45-yard touchdown pass from Angel Flores to Anthony Flores.
Nathan Long bolted for a 40-yard TD with 9:16 left in the second quarter, and the running clock began after Angel Flores scored on a 14-yard run with 6:45 remaining in the half to make it 42-0.
Anthony Flores caught a 28-yard pass from Angel Flores to set up a 1-yard TD run by lineman Nick Anaya with time winding down in the second period.
CG Union had only one possession in the second half. The last two plays of the three-play series were Garrett’s 32-yard run and Kevin White’s 20-yard TD run.
The Cougars finished with 329 total yards, rushing for 197 and passing for 132.
The Bulldogs averted being shut out when Francisco Corrales scored on a 1-yard run to cap a six-play, 26-yard drive.
Josh Villa was 7 for 8 on extra-point kicks for CG Union.
