CASA GRANDE — Nothing was normal in 2020, and that includes high school volleyball. But Combs senior Kerstyn Hedrick wasn’t going to let challenges slow her down.

After leading her team to a region title and being recognized as the top player in her region, Hedrick is the 2020 PinalCentral Volleyball Player of the Year. As a junior, she made PinalCentral’s all-county team as a second team selection.

During the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Hedrick led the Coyotes to a 9-3 overall record and the 4A Black Canyon region championship.

She was a force in the middle for Combs, with 33 total blocks and 87 kills in 36 sets played. Her 2.4 kills per set ranked No. 24 in Class 4A, and her 0.9 blocks per set ranked seventh in 4A, according to MaxPreps.

The runner-up for Player of the Year goes to Aurora Dargle of Poston Butte. Dargle, a senior libero for the Broncos, was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year in the 4A Black Canyon.

Dargle was an honorable mention selection on the all-county team last year, which is symbolic of her significant improvement on the court. She ranked No. 16 in 4A with 181 digs, and she tied for eighth in 4A with 4.2 digs per set.

The rest of the first team all-county selections include setter Kalyssa Fox of Casa Grande, and hitters Faith Adams of Casa Grande, Jayla Scott of Vista Grande and Miya Alvarado of Florence.

Fox and Adams, both seniors, guided the Cougars to a 7-10 overall record in their first year against 5A competition. Both also received second team all-region honors in the 5A Sonoran.

Outside hitter Adams recorded 131 kills, which ranked No. 26 in 5A, and her 2.3 kills per set tied for 29th in 5A.

Fox totaled 222 assists, good for No. 22 among 5A players, and her 3.8 assists per set tied for 30th in 5A. She also ranked 29th in 5A with 30 aces.

Scott, a junior, was a standout for Vista Grande who also stood out among her region peers, winning the 4A Black Canyon Offensive Player of the Year. She had 85 kills, and her 2.0 kills per set tied for 38th in 4A.

Alvarado, also a junior, was a second team all-region selection in a tough 3A South Central that included Thatcher and Tucson Pusch Ridge. She had 74 kills despite missing a few matches. Her 2.7 kills per set ranked 20th in Class 3A.
