CASA GRANDE — The Sunrise Optimist Club has named two fifth graders as Students of the Month for January. The students will be recognized at a breakfast meeting of the club on Thursday and at the January Governing Board meeting. They are:

Jacob Velcko, at Ironwood Elementary School in Pani McKenzie’s classroom. His parents are Chris and Melanie Velcko. He was described as an amazing student who spreads kindness and joy. Jacob’s leadership skills enabled him to start a math tutoring group to help struggling math students. He is a member of the Student Council and helps out with the many school activities and events. Jacob volunteers helping feed and clothe the homeless in the community. He leads by example and displays exemplary character.

Ciana Price, an Ironwood student in Cecilia Zimmerman’s classroom. Her parents are Chad and Corina Price. Ciana has been a leader at Ironwood for many years as a Lighthouse Leader and as a member of the Student Council. This year she is student body president and helps keep the Ironwood school spirit going. Ciana is a great role model and is always helpful to others. Ciana is very active in the community with her passion for softball. She also volunteers to help in the nursery at her church.
