CASA GRANDE — The first tangible sign of progress is being seen at the future site of a Lucid Motors manufacturing plant.

Crews on Wednesday began grading the site in preparation for construction, according to David Salguero of Lucid Motors.

“The city has issued the at-risk grading permit and our understanding is Lucid is in the process of beginning the earth moving,” Casa Grande City Manager Larry Rains said. “We’re excited to see the project underway.”

Salguero said the plant, at the southwest corner of Thornton and Peters roads on the west side of Casa Grande, is still on track to begin production of the Lucid Air in late 2020.

Lucid Motors announced plans in November 2016 to build a manufacturing plant to produce electric vehicles by 2018. However, that date was later pushed back to December 2020. The plant could have 2,000 workers within a few years, according to plans.
