SACATON — The 75th anniversary of the start of the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima was Feb. 19. The battle is probably best remembered for the Feb. 23, 1945, flag raising atop Mount Suribachi, immortalized in a news photograph and a famous statue in Arlington, Virginia.

Despite the wet weather Saturday, a number of spectators and visiting veterans came out for a commemoration parade and gathering held in Sacaton.

The Marine Corps held a ceremony at the Iwo Jima memorial on Thursday. The National Museum of the Marine Corps, in Triangle, Virginia, hosted events and a concert over the weekend.
