CASA GRANDE — Internationally known Christian rockers, the Newsboys will perform at the Crusade 2020 event sponsored by CrossRoads Church of Casa Grande.
The Australian band has released 17 albums and is known for their performances and appearances in the movies “God’s Not Dead,” “God’s Not Dead 2” and “God’s Not Dead: A Light In Darkness.”
“This is a big deal. The Newsboys are a real Christian rock band and will put on a spectacular show,” said CrossRoads Church Pastor Tim Hill.
The expected date for Crusade 2020 is May 2.
For the past few years, CrossRoads Church has held a crusade-style event each year featuring free concerts with nationally known Christian rock bands.
The 2019 show featuring Big Daddy Weave, held in April at Casa Grande Union High School’s Al Van Hazel Stadium, attracted an estimated 8,000 people.
Christian musicians Phil Wickham and Sonicflood have also performed at previous CrossRoads Church events.
The cost of producing the Big Daddy Weave concert was about $250,000. Although church members donate to the events, show sponsors and area businesses played a big role in helping to fund each show.
Producing the Newsboys concert is expected to be more expensive and Hill hopes local sponsors are excited to sign on to help cover the cost.
“This is the biggest band to ever play in Casa Grande, and the bigger the band the bigger the cost,” Hill said.
The Newsboys include Michael Tait on lead vocals; Duncan Phillips on drums; Jeff Frankenstein on keys and bass; and Jody Davis on guitar and vocals as well as Phil Joel and Peter Furler.
They began recording in Australia in 1985 and have become an icon in the Christian music industry with six gold albums, 8 million units in career sales and 33 No. 1 singles. They’ve also won several Grammy and American Music Award nominations.
