FLORENCE — A 19-year-old man from Mexico was in U.S. Border Patrol custody after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 10 from Picacho to Casa Grande last week.
Carlo Sebastian Rodriguez Mendez has been charged with flight from law enforcement and endangerment.
According to court documents, Mendez on May 19 fled from an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper who tried to conduct a traffic stop for a moving violation near Picacho.
With speeds reaching more than 90 mph, DPS placed deflating spikes in the road, and after the tires were punctured Mendez is alleged to have continued to drive on the rims while making unsafe and evasive maneuvers around other vehicles.
DPS was able to place a GPS device on the rear of the vehicle to allow them to follow it at a safe distance.
Police then conducted a pursuit intervention technique on the vehicle, causing it to roll.
Mendez and two passengers were apprehended, while two other passengers ran into the desert, although one was apprehended.
The passengers, who were undocumented, were turned over to Border Patrol.
