CASA GRANDE — The Casa Grande Elementary School District is continuing to feed students in need even though schools are closed.

As of Thursday evening, the district had passed out around 4,400 meals as part of its drive-up meal delivery service at seven locations throughout the district, said district spokesman Mike Cruz in an email. And the number of families coming to pick up meals is growing. The district is looking at the possibility of expanding the service next week.

The district has been handing out the meals between 9:30 and 11 a.m. every day since Tuesday. The meals are open to any child between the ages of 1 and 18, even if they don’t go to a district school. Families looking for more information on the program can send an email to outreach@cgesd.org.

The district board also decided in an emergency meeting on Wednesday to continue to pay teachers and staff who have been sent home because of the school closures. Essential staff who are required to work at district buildings, such as maintenance and cafeteria workers, are being paid time and a half.

Cruz said the district plans to reopen the schools on March 30, unless the state decides to continue to keep schools closed. The district is in communication with the Arizona Department of Education and the Governor’s Office. If the school closures continue, the district will continue to inform parents and staff about the situation, he said.

The district is also working on a distance learning plan for students, just in case the state decides to close schools for the rest of the school year, he said.
