CASA GRANDE — Marine Corps League Detachment 901 made a special presentation to a local police officer, Cpl. Matthew Perry, on Thursday evening at department headquarters.
Perry, who has been with the CGPD for 11 years, was given a framed “history of the American police officer” plaque and a Detachment 901 challenge coin prior to commencement of his night shift, joined by fellow officers.
In his remarks prior to the presentation, Lt. Chris Palmer of the CGPD said the award for outstanding service had been peer-reviewed and that there were many who were just as deserving as Perry.
“We solicit emails from our supervisors and I got some feedback from sergeants and from some other people,” Palmer observed. “Although Corporal Perry wasn’t the only person that was recommended, his recommendation came in pretty strongly.”
Commandant Frank Alger of the 901 detachment told Perry and the assembled police officers that the league wanted to acknowledge the important work that the police officers do for the community of Casa Grande.
“We really do appreciate what you guys do,” said Alger. “I know you guys get beat up a lot, people can be pretty nasty to law enforcement sometimes. However, there are people out there like us that really recognize you guys and how you put your lives on the line and we really appreciate what you do to keep our city safe.”
Alger read a recommendation that had been penned by Palmer, which in part says, “Corporal Perry delivers an exceptional work product founded on a strong work ethic, team support, customer service, self-discipline and his overall skill set as a police officer. As a supervisor he produces quality patrol investigations, competently manages critical incidents and establishes prosecutable cases through the efforts of his team. He takes the initiative to anticipate problems and improve the organization’s overall service.”
After the recommendation was read, Perry was roundly applauded by his fellow colleagues and Marine Corps League attendees.
Palmer told PinalCentral his department always appreciates gestures of support from the local community, when it comes from a service unit such as the Marine Corps League, the award given to Perry is extra special.
“We do have tremendous support from our community but those organizations within the community that recognize service like military organizations means a lot to us,” he said. “When they come in and recognize what our officers are doing, especially our former military officers, it is so important,” said Palmer.
Alger concurred with Palmer’s observation and told PinalCentral his organization is proud to offer its support to local police.
“It’s really important for us to be able to come in and recognize our police and let them know that there are citizens out there that support them,” Alger said. “By giving these awards and showing this little bit of appreciation, I hope it helps lift their spirits and gives them that motivation to continue doing the great job they are doing.”
