STANFIELD — A Casa Grande man is facing kidnapping and assault charges after he allegedly hit a family member and drove off with a child.

According to Pinal County Superior Court records, John L. Diaz, 29, is charged with domestic violence kidnapping, domestic violence aggravated assault and assault.

At 11:11 a.m. on Aug. 7, Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies responded to North Anderson Road north of State Route 84 near Stanfield for a domestic call.

A woman told deputies that she and Diaz had gotten into an argument and she had left the home. Diaz allegedly followed her in his car and called her on her cellphone trying to convince her to pull over. He allegedly told her that he would give her the child he had in his car.

The woman said she pulled over and Diaz pulled in front of her vehicle. She told deputies that Diaz then walked back to her car, pulled her out of her vehicle and began arguing with her again. She told deputies that Diaz hit her, choked her and dragged her across the ground.

Several witnesses arrived and argued with Diaz before he went back to his car and left with the child, who was still sitting in his vehicle.

Diaz later returned to the scene with an uncle and surrendered himself to deputies.
