I-10 Vehicle Fire

Smoke was visible from a vehicle fire on Interstate 10 near Jimmie Kerr Boulevard Sunday.

CASA GRANDE — A crash and vehicle fire closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 in Casa Grande near Jimmie Kerr Boulevard Sunday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The closure was three miles north of a spilled load that had closed the right lanes of I-10 westbound near Sunland Gin Road earlier.

The closure occurred just after 11 a.m. and lasted until after 3 p.m., ADOT said.

The closure caused heavy delays and traffic backup in the area.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the vehicle fire was the result of a three-vehicle injury collision on the Jimmie Kerr Boulevard overpass.

One of the vehicles burst into flames following contact with another vehicle. Fortunately, all three people in that vehicle were extricated, DPS said Tuesday.

Two women were taken to Banner Casa Grande Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle was flown to a Phoenix area hospital. DPS had no information on the extent of the driver's injuries.
