Mental Health First Aid for Older Adults is an 8-hour training program, broken up into two sessions, designed for adults who regularly interact with older people (caregivers, nurses, agency home care providers, etc). It is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adults age 65 and older. It builds an understanding of the importance of early intervention and how to help an older adult in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge.
You must attend both classes to become certified.
Participants will learn the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among older adults, such as depression and anxiety. Participants DO NOT learn to diagnose, provide therapy or counseling - rather participants will learn to support an older person developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan. Workbook is included at no cost.
