CASA GRANDE — Two people died in a motor vehicle collision at 12:39 a.m. Monday in Casa Grande, police said.
The early morning crash occurred on South Thornton Road near West Peters Road and closed the roads for five hours.
Angelica Kakar, 36, and Michael Epps, 24, both of Casa Grande, died when the 1994 Honda Civic they were in collided with a turning semi tractor-trailer, according to Casa Grande Police Department spokesman Thomas Anderson. Kakar was the driver of the Honda when the impact occurred.
“They were traveling northbound on Thornton Road. A tractor-trailer was coming off Thornton onto Peters and turned in front of them, but well ahead of them,” Anderson said. “They were traveling faster than the posted speed limit. Speed is a factor.”
Anderson said the Honda hit the rear axle of the tractor-trailer at a rate of high speed and both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Initial indication is that speed and impairment may have been a factor,” Anderson said.
The driver of the truck, a 29-year-old man, was not injured in the collision.
No citations were issued in the collision and the case remains under investigation.
