PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix police say a 40-year-old armed man was fatally shot during an encounter with officers responding to a report of a fight that turned out to involve alleged domestic violence.

A Police Department spokesman said one officer shot the man Thursday night just outside an apartment's door.

Sgt., Tommy Thompson said the officer fired after the man opened the door and then quickly stepped out of the apartment and toward another officer.

Police did not immediately release the man's identity or other information about the circumstances of the incident.

Thompson said the incident was under investigation.
