ARIZONA CITY — Pinal County Sheriff's deputies arrested five Mexican nationals near Arizona City for smuggling 90 pounds of marijuana.

According to a PCSO probable cause statement, Esau Orona Villa, Juan Alvarez-Gonzalez, Jorge Garcia-Lopez, Vicente Carrolo-Aranda and Feliciano Due-Santiago were arrested Feb. 6 with 89.94 pounds of marijuana divided in five packages.

The men, who only listed their addresses as Mexico, were arrested for transportation of marijuana for sale, conspiracy, unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle, possession/use of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale.

The five were observed by PCSO investigators walking in the desert about 1 p.m. on Feb. 6 west of Arizona City, just south of Interstate 8. They attempted to hide in a brushy area of the desert when deputies attempted to arrest them, according to court records.

The marijuana was divided into bundles weighing 22.55, 22.7, 22.26, 11.24 and 11.24 pounds.

All five were officially charged on Tuesday with possession of marijuana for sale and transportation of marijuana for sale.

Each man is being held in the Pinal County Adult Detention Center pending the posting of a $25,000 secured bond.

They each are scheduled to make a first appearance in Superior Court Friday.
