ARIZONA CITY — An Arts and Meals special event aims to reach isolated seniors in Arizona City, offering them a fun activity in which they can socialize with others.

Led by area artist Lisa Swanson of ArtMobile, the event begins at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Arizona City Fire Station.

“Join the Arts ’n’ Meals van outdoors for a morning of socializing while creating an art project and enjoying a meal together,” an announcement about the event said.

There is no cost to attend, but those wishing to take part must preregister prior to the event. It’s open to seniors who live in Arizona City.

Swanson travels throughout various the communities in her ArtMobile van, visiting senior facilities and schools and hosting special events.

She also hosts art classes in her downtown art studio.

In previous interviews, she has said that art can have a profound impact on the quality of life for aging seniors because creating engages the part of the brain that’s needed to focus and encourages socialization.

A recent study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a branch of the National Institutes of Health, found that older adults who received art lessons from a professional art teacher had increased social engagement, sense of empowerment and psychological health.
