ARIZONA CITY — With school officially out for the summer, kids in Arizona City typically look forward to the Arizona City Fire District’s Summer Safety Mentoring Program.
The three-day-a-week program usually kicks off in early June, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program is currently on hold. Fire Chief Jeff Heaton told PinalCentral that the fire district is awaiting direction from the county and the state.
The 12 weeks of the “Water Days” program offers kids a safe place to spend a majority of the morning enjoying various water activities, and they are also given lesson from the fire district personnel about fire safety.
Last year the firehouse saw about 120 kids per day and received help from the Toltec School District and various organizations in providing a lunch for the kids.
