FLORENCE — A Gold Canyon man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for child molestation and sexual abuse after accepting a plea agreement.

Donald Gibbs, 52, was indicted on two counts of molesting a child under the age of 15 and five counts of sexual abuse in August 2019. He accepted a plea agreement in August 2020 and pleaded guilty to one count of molesting a child under 15, one count of attempted molestation of a child and sexual abuse. The sentences are to be served consecutively, or one after the other.

On Sept. 25, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the first molestation count with credit for 424 days served in jail and a lifetime of supervised probation for the attempted molestation and sexual abuse counts. He will have to register as a sex offender when he is released.

Gibbs was accused of touching the same child on at least seven occasions.

He could have faced between 10 and 24 years for each count of molesting a child, five and 15 years for each of the five counts of sexual abuse and nine months to two years for the one count of attempted molestation of a child.
